This is where Nellie Croy Smith lives on the internet.

I write and edit, teach and strategize.[1]
Here, I write about whatever scent I'm tracking. I'm always on the trail of something. Currently, I'm writing mostly about American stories and religion, as well as my own experiments in how to live right now. I'm also a nerd who likes to write about writing.
I should add: This is a site intended for reading and for taking the time to do so wholeheartedly.
I’ve gone to some trouble to ensure that this website is beautiful to look at, less frenetic than what writers are expected to provide nowadays. I don't have any affiliate links or products to sell. I will not be breaking my paragraphs down into internet-viable pellets. I have no desire to optimize anything. I get plenty of all that in my day job[2].
I'm honored you're here. I'm honored by your attention. My intention, in return, is to provide a place where you can slow down a little. I hope you do.
How to collaborate
What I do (and how to work with me)
Teacher
I've taught in primary and secondary schools, tutored in writing and music, and taught undergraduate courses at Ohio State (where I got an MFA in Creative Writing).
Currently, I'm a volunteer with the Indiana Prison Writer's Workshop as well as the facilitator of Essay Club (in the Sustenance Writing Community).
My teaching docket is full currently, but I do lead workshops by request.
Creative Consultant
I help you create what you need to create in the world—from books to businesses. I ask good questions, give smart advice, and help you organize your thoughts and take concrete action.
References available. I select projects based on availability and fit (if I don't think I can help you, I say so).
Editor
I take a handful of essays/articles (max 10-15) and books (max 2-3) per year for developmental editing/coaching.
The reason I take so few is that I give each project my full attention. It can take a lot of scribbling, walks, and focused thought for me to feel what a piece of writing truly wants to do and how to help you get it there.
In short, I take a lot of time for each project, and because of that I'm pretty selective. You can email me to see if I have an opening.
Author
I just finished a book myself! It's ready for representation, so if that's your business shoot me a line.
